School Board Sets ‘96 Property Tax Levy
The Spokane School Board Tuesday set its 1996 property tax levy for maintenance and operations at $31.5 million.
That is $1.9 million less than the amount approved by the district’s voters in 1994.
Associate Superintendent Walt Rulffes said the rollback was made possible when the Legislature earlier this year approved a levy equalization payment to the Spokane district.
Property owners paid $4.44 per $1,000 of assessed valuation on the maintenance and operations levy in 1995, but will pay an estimated $4 per $1,000 because of the rollback as well as inflated property values.
The district also will collect $8 million in property taxes in 1996 to make payments on bonds sold to finance school construction.
