Walesa Says Finances Will Be An Open Book
President Lech Walesa said Wednesday he was ready to reveal all his financial holdings and prove he has paid his taxes.
“I have no secrets. I can reveal everything immediately and my wife can do it, too,” Walesa said.
Walesa was responding to a motion filed in parliament Wednesday that his finances and those of a political opponent be scrutinized dating back to 1992.
Walesa and Aleksander Kwasniewski, the leader of reformed communists, each won about one-third of the votes in Sunday’s presidential election and will compete in a runoff Nov. 19.
Kwasniewski refused last week to disclose details of his financial affairs but said Tuesday he would be ready to do so if Walesa agreed.
Demands that Kwasniewski reveal his finances followed press reports on the substantial holdings of his wife, Jolanta, and the wife of Prime Minister Jozef Oleksy.
