Cougars Hold Off Oregon

Washington State needed an extra game and Sarah Silvernail’s 15 kills and five blocks to defeat Oregon in Pacific-10 Conference volleyball Friday night at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.

WSU, ranked 10th in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, beat the Ducks 11-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-7, and improved to 11-4 in the Pac-10 - the most league wins in WSU volleyball history.

WSU (19-4) handed Oregon (8-18) its 14th loss in 15 league matches before a crowd of 2,343.

Silvernail, who hit .833 with 15 kills in her three games of the match, missed the entire week of practice because of a viral stomach infection. The junior All-America candidate did not play in the first game Friday, but came on to help the Cougars enjoy a 14-3 blocks advantage.

Freshman Beth Craig and junior Louisa Kawulok added 13 and seven kills, respectively.

“The match was a lot closer than the scores indicate,” UI coach Tom Hilbert said. “Our outside hitters really stepped it up tonight, which made a huge difference.”

Idaho (24-4, 12-1 Big Sky) will end its regular season tonight at Montana, then returns home to host the conference championships Nov. 17-18.
