Cougars Hurting As Apple Cup Approaches
The healing powers of Apple Cup Week will get a severe test this week as WSU attempts to get well in time for next Saturday’s annual showdown against arch-rival Washington in Seattle.
Along with fifth-year senior Shawn Deeds, who started at quarterback and sustained a career-ending shoulder separation on the fourth play of Saturday’s defeat, the Cougars lost five other players to injuries.
Starting running back Frank Madu got his bell rung and his knee bruised, starting defensive end Dwayne Sanders re-injured his right ankle, offensive tackle Ricky Austin sprained an ankle, starting cornerback Shad Hinchen suffered a concussion and backup tight end David Knuff sustained a shoulder injury.
But coach Mike Price said he expects everyone, with the exception of Deeds, to recover in time for next Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. kickoff at Husky Stadium.
