Heisman hopefuls
Eddie George, RB/Sr., Ohio St.: In No. 2 Buckeyes’ 41-3 thrashing of the Illini, George rushed for a school-record 314 yards on 36 carries and scored three times. On the season, George has 1,592 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Warrick Dunn, RB/Sr., Fla. St.: In Seminoles’ 28-12 win over the Tar Heels, Dunn finished with 143 yards on 27 carries (two TDs) to become the first running back in Florida State history with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
Darnell Autry, RB, Northwestern.: The Sports Illustrated coverboy rushed for 110 yards on 32 carries in Cats’ 31-20 win over Iowa. On the season, Autry has 1,449 yards on 323 carries and 15 TDs.
Tommie Frazier, QB/Sr., Nebraska: In No. 1 Huskers’ 41-3 romp over No. 10 Kansas, Frazier ran 10 times for 99 yards and completed 10 of 15 passes for 86 yards. He set Nebraska records for career TD passes (42) and total offense (5,313 yards).
Troy Davis, RB/Soph., Iowa St.: The nation’s leading rusher carried 41 times for 183 yards to run his season total to 1,830 in the Cyclones’ 49-7 loss to Kansas State.
Danny Wuerffel, QB/Sr., Florida: Threw five touchdown passes and connected for 304 yards in the Gators’ 63-7 rout over South Carolina.
Sideline salutes
Moe Williams of Kentucky scored three TDs and rushed for 272 yards, setting three school rushing records in a 33-14 victory over Cincinnati. Williams equaled his school record with 40 carries while establishing season marks with 264 rushes for 1,449 yards and 14 rushing TDs.
Jerry Azumah, a freshman, rushed for a school-record 265 yards to lead New Hampshire to a 12-9 victory over Villanova.
Alex Smith of Indiana set an NCAA record with 22 carries in the first quarter of the Hoosiers’ 31-13 loss to Michigan State. Smith finished with 183 yards on 44 carries.
Streaks
Southern Methodist extended the nation’s longest losing streak among major colleges to nine games with a 48-7 loss to Baylor. … Jackson State beat Prairie View A&M 68-0 extending college football’s all-time record losing streak to 57 games. Prairie View (0-11) hasn’t won a game since Oct. 28, 1989.
