Police Arrest Suspect After Rape Reported
Spokane Police arrested a transient early Saturday after a woman flagged down a patrol car in downtown Spokane and told the officer she was raped.
The woman stopped the patrol car at Sprague and Madelia about midnight. She told police a man with a handgun had just raped her under Sprague Avenue at Erie and Sprague Way.
She said the man, who had a full beard and was wearing blue jeans, boots and a plaid shirt, fled west on Second Avenue in a dark, 1980s Jeep.
Police stopped a Jeep that matched the description at Mission and Greene. Officers said they found a handgun under the front seat. The Jeep’s driver, Dwayne McDevitt, fit the attacker’s description.
McDevitt, 33, was charged with first-degree rape. He told police he was a transient.
Police said the woman later identified McDevitt as her attacker. She was treated at a local hospital.
