Obituaries

Ernest Smith Spokane

Service for Ernest E. Smith, 77, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mr. Smith died Friday.

He was born in Dayton, Wash.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He had lived in Spokane for 41 years, and worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Mead for 18 years as a crane operator, and for various companies as a truck driver for 12 years. He retired in 1979.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Ruth Smith; two sons, Terry Smith and George Marshall Jr., both of Deer Park; nine daughters, Cindy Murdock, Glenda McTigue and Tina Goodwin, all of Deer Park; Pennie Jarrett of Newman Lake, Sharon Christensen, Tammy Reidy, Theresa Kirk and Vicki Smith, all of Spokane, and Linda Warner of Montana; 29 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Tim Brown Post Falls

Graveside service for Tim Brown, 57, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. English Funeral Chapel of Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brown, who was born in Kalispell, Mont., died Friday.

He came to the area in 1972 from Hamilton, Mont. He married Anna Birnel in the early 1970s.

Mr. Brown was a Navy Seabee in Korea.

He worked as a warehouse foreman for Pacific Hide and Fur in Spokane and enjoyed bowling. He was a member of the Post Falls Eagles.

Survivors include his wife, of Minnesota; one son, Raymond Brown of Post Falls; four daughters, Cari Bedwell of Medical Lake, Wash., Nancy Liem of Indonesia, Tina Brown-Santa Cruz of Kennewick, Wash., and Sue Brown-Magnus; mother, Lorraine Croskrey of Kalispell; two brothers, David of California, and Ross of New Orleans; three sisters, Loretta Brown of Libby, Mont., and Leilia Brown and Donna Kidwell, both of Kalispell; stepsister, Lucille Parpart of Post Falls; stepbrother, Carry Croskrey of Columbia Falls, Mont.; and 11 grandchildren.

Helen Bowman Spokane

Private graveside service for Helen Bowman, 92, will be held. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Minneapolis, Mrs. Bowman died Friday.

She had lived in Spokane for 47 years and was a homemaker. She volunteered at Indian Trail Elementary as a noon aide for nearly 10 years.

Mrs. Bowman is survived by one son, Philip Arbogast of Sacramento, Calif.; three daughters, Betty Lou Wright and Sally Ann Bean, both of Spokane, and Cynthia Lower of Bellevue, Wash.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

John Aktepy Spokane

Service for John “Bob” Aktepy, 79, will be today at 2 p.m. at the St. Maries Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mr. Aktepy, who was born in South Dakota, died Thursday. He attended high school in Ringling, Mont., and worked at Newburg Mine in Helena, Mont., marrying Hilda Bennett in 1936.

Mr. Aktepy later moved to Garrison, Mont., and worked at the Garrison Phosphate Mine.

He moved to St. Maries in 1945 and operated the St. Maries Oil Co.-Cabin City Service for 14 years. He later went to work for the St. Maries Lumber Co., and Potlatch Corp., before retiring in 1980. He moved to Spokane in 1992.

He enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, motorcycles and snowmobiling. He was a lifetime member of the St. Maries Elks Lodge and a former member of the Benewah County Sheriff’s Posse.

Survivors include his wife, at home; son, John Aktepy of Spokane; brother, Charles Aktepy of Missoula, Mont.; four sisters, Betty Orvis of Spokane, Hazel Heikkila, Catherine Chandler and Helen Williamson, all of Missoula; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald Armstead Spokane

Service for Ronald James Armstead, 22, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Armstead was shot and killed Tuesday.

He was born in Spokane. He worked in housekeeping in Spokane nursing homes.

He is survived by his parents, Ronald Armstead Sr., and Glenna Mitchell, both of Spokane; three children, Ronniesha, Adrian Faye and Derek Armstead; three brothers, Kilo Fletcher, Michael Armstead, and Orry Adams; two sisters, Cassandra and Darnious Armstead, all of Spokane; his grandparents, Hazel and Arthur Armstead Sr., both of Spokane, and Anna Crandel of Idaho.

Ella Porter Spokane

No service will be held For Ella D. Porter, 92, at her request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Porter, who died Thursday, was born in Hannah, N.D. She moved to Spokane in 1929, and was a homemaker. During World War II, she was a telephone operator for Spokane City Hall.

She was a member of Manito Golf and Country Club. Her husband of 49 years, Howard Porter, died in 1974.

Mrs. Porter is survived by one daughter, Donna Skaer of Spokane; one sister, Jessie Porter of Boscobel, Wis.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Beth Woodruff Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Beth Woodruff, 85, will be today at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Woodruff, who was born in Peck, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She was raised in Peck and married John Woodruff in Clarkston, Wash., in 1942. They lived in the Lewiston/Clarkston area until moving to Superior, Mont., in 1952 and to Coeur d’Alene in 1955.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing and gardening. Mrs. Woodruff was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include her husband, at home; two sons, Mike of Washington and Gary of Arizona; one daughter, Janice Durkin of Denver; and brother, Shannon of Illinois.

Christina Campanelli Coeur d’Alene

Private family service for Christina Ashley Campanelli, 2, was held Nov. 2 at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Christina died on Sept. 24 in Spokane.

She was born on March 16, 1993, in Sandpoint and moved to Coeur d’Alene later that year.

She enjoyed listening to music, dancing and doing everything her older sister did.

Her nickname was “On the go girl.”

Survivors include her mother, Eileen Campanelli, and sister, Maria Campanelli, both of Coeur d’Alene; grandmother, Mary Campanelli of Soquel, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Farria McGlocklin Spokane

Service for Farria McGlocklin, 81, will be at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McGlocklin died Tuesday.

She was born in Troy, Mont.

She had lived in Spokane for 45 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband of 62 years, Kenneth McGlocklin, died in 1994.

She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie Peterson of Houston; three sons, Bernard, Dennis and Steven McGlocklin, all of Spokane; three sisters, Azella Smith of Jerome, Idaho, Florence Albert of Elk, and Mildred Berchard of Spokane; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
