WSU Students Awarded Communication Scholarships
Several Washington State University students have been awarded scholarships from the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at WSU.
They are:
Nicky Nixon, St. John, Wash., $500 Newland Reilly Journalism Scholarship. He is studying journalism and is on the President’s Honor Roll.
Jason Frederick, a 1995 graduate of Mead High School, $500 Newland Reilly Journalism Scholarship. He participated in the Running Start Program at Spokane Falls Community College, where he maintained a 3.8 grade-point average. He plans to study journalism at WSU.
Kim Jackson, a 1991 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, $1,500 Haas Award of Merit. She is a senior studying broadcasting.
Michael Lane, a graduate of Newport (Wash.) High School, $350 Scripps League Newspaper Scholarship. He is a senior studying communication and has been on the President’s Honor Roll every semester.
Amy Jo Sleeth, a 1989 graduate of Mead High School, $500 Newland Reilly Journalism Scholarship. She graduated from WSU in May and completed an internship last summer.
Tanya Weitkamp, $500 Katie Whitworth Memorial Scholarship. She has been on the President’s Honor Roll and is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She is a junior studying broadcasting.
Nathan Zentz, a 1992 graduate of Shadle Park High School, $1,000 Linda Jenkins Advertising Scholarship. He is on the President’s Honor Roll. He is a senior studying advertising.
Rhonda Ferns was awarded the Directors’ Award at the Miss Spokane Scholarship Program held in October at Spokane Falls Community College. She received the award for her punctuality, cooperativeness and good attitude. She is a senior at Mead High School and was one of the 11 contestants vying for the title of Miss Spokane.
Four Shadle Park High School graduates have been named as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level AP exams.
All graduated this year.
Nathaniel Hager qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor award, by earning grades of 3 or above on four or more AP examinations, with an average grade of at least 3.25.
Carrie Fields, Gregory Harrison and Angela Vilhauer, qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP examinations with grades 3 or higher.
Dr. Timothy Icenogle, a cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon in Spokane, was honored recently by Casper College in Casper, Wyo., as an “exemplary alumnus.”
After receiving an associate degree at Casper, Icenogle received his bachelor’s degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and his doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque.
He is director of the Inland Northwest Transplant Program and the Mechanical Assist Program at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
Gretchen Laete, a sophomore at Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee, has been chosen as a campus ambassador. Ambassadors give tours, answer prospective students’ questions and sometimes host high school students overnight to give a taste of college life.
Laete is the daughter of Jake and Janelle Laete, Spokane.
