Another Fire Hits Azerbaijan Subway

Compiled From Wire Services

A small fire erupted in the Baku subway during the evening rush hour Thursday, less than three weeks after nearly 300 people were killed in the world’s worst subway disaster. No injuries were reported Thursday.

Authorities blamed a faulty fuse for the fire in a downtown tunnel.

Sparks and smoke began spewing from a subway carriage as the train approached a station, the Azerbaijani prosecutor’s office said.

The train stopped near the station, and passengers were evacuated.

In addition to nearly 300 deaths, the Oct. 28 tragedy injured about 200. Most victims died from poisonous gases which filled the tunnel after a similar short-circuit led to a fire.
