Thomas Walters Spokane

Visitation for Thomas E. “Tom” Walters, 78, is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Walters, who died Wednesday, was born in Winona, Texas.

He served in the Air Force for 21 years and retired as a master sergeant in 1959. He had lived in Spokane for 21 years.

He was later employed by Felts Field and The Crescent department store.

His first wife, Helen, preceded him in death.

Mr. Walters is survived by his wife, Mildred Walters; one brother, Lou Walters of Bonham, Texas; three sisters, Alta Eggleston of Cayuga, Texas, Mrs. Schaper of Houston and Doris Walter of Athens, Texas.

Howard Rice Davenport, Wash.

Private burial for Howard M. Rice, 88, will be held. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Albion, Wash., Mr. Rice died Monday.

He had lived in Kelso, Wash., and Ketchikan, Alaska, and had lived in Davenport for the last 18 years.

He worked for the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill and operated two taverns in Kelso.

Mr. Rice was a member of the Masonic and Elks lodges.

His wife of 25 years, Callie Rice, died in 1972.

Mr. Rice is survived by two daughters, Esther Kimball of Longview, Wash., and Janet Norton of Kelso; one son, Howard Rice of Longview; one stepson, Charles McCarthy of Davenport; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Spokane County Unit.

Elzena Wasvick Newport, Wash.

Service for Elzena M. (Gardner) Wasvick, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newport United Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Newport Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wasvick died Wednesday.

She was born in Penrith, Wash., and graduated from Newport High School.

She and her first husband, Owen “Hoogy” Gardner, operated Hoogy’s Restaurant in Metaline, Wash., for 14 years. Mr. Gardner died in 1967.

She married Orlin Wasvick in 1970. They lived in Newport, and he died in 1978.

Mrs. Wasvick was a member of the Pend Oreille County Historical Society and was a docent at the Pend Oreille County Historical Society Museum. She was also a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, Metaline American Legion Auxiliary, Newport United Church of Christ and the Women’s Fellowship.

Survivors include one nephew, Charles Reidt of Seattle; and two nieces, Vicki Reidt of Anchorage, Alaska, and Barbara Thompson of Anacortes, Wash.
