Mattingly Not To Re-Sign
Don Mattingly and the Yankees will announce jointly, probably today, that Mattingly, a free agent, will not re-sign with the Yankees or with anyone else between now and the start of next season, according to an article in Sunday’s New York Times.
Mattingly won’t retire, but will let the season begin without him so he can try retirement, the article said..
People who know of his plans said Friday that if he finds that he likes it, he will pursue retirement full-time; if he discovers that he misses baseball, he will look for a job, either for the rest of the season or for 1997, preferably with the Yankees.
At Castella, Calif., Don Larsen, who pitched the only perfect game in World Series history, was released from the hospital, two days after being involved in a 30-vehicle highway accident.
Larsen was treated for cuts to his head and arms. Larsen’s wife, Corrine, sustained back injuries, and was one of three people who remained hospitalized in fair condition. The Larsens are residents of Hayden Lake, Idaho.
