Donated Turkeys Flock To Charity
Spokane residents donated more than 2,000 turkeys on Tuesday and Wednesday so that needy families could prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
When the Salvation Army opened its food basket distribution Monday, the charity had a mere 1,000 turkeys. More than 2,500 families requested baskets.
After the charity’s plight became public, turkeys came pouring in.
“We’ll have as many as 1,000 left over to hand out for Christmas,” said Rich Silva, community services coordinator for the Salvation Army.
In a warehouse donated by US West, needy families picked up the turkeys and trimmings until 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Just before closing down, the Salvation Army had figured the baskets would feed 7,578 people Thanksgiving dinner today. , DataTimes
