Road Expansion Could Cut Into Athletic Fields

Spokane County has offered the Mead School District $22,727 for property on Farwell Road between Pittsburg and Crestline needed for road expansion.

The land - about 30 feet wide and one-quarter mile long - includes a 10-foot wide strip along Farwell that now is part of the Northwood Junior High athletic fields.

The county has offered $117,412 to pay for repairs to the sports fields. Such work would include regrading the fields, new grass and replacement of fencing.

The Spokane Youth Sports Association uses the fields frequently, according to Dave Compton, who runs the group’s baseball program and helps with the soccer program. He said the association may look for other fields.

The Mead School Board will hold a public hearing on the matter at 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at Colbert Elementary, E. 4625 Greenbluff Road.
