College Basketball Tonight: St. Martin’s At University Of Idaho

Idaho (1-1 in exhibition games) opens its regular season against the NAIA visitors (2-3) from Lacey, Wash., at 7:05 at Memorial Gym. UI has won 14 straight in the antiquated building. Vandals have won 10 consecutive season openers.

At a glance

Idaho will be without rebounding whiz Harry Harrison (sprained knee), but must still be heavily favored against the Saints, whose top player is former Vandals tight end Tracey Thomas. A sleek 6-foot-4, Thomas has bounced from UI’s football program to Weber State to St. Martin’s. Another transfer, Mark Hunter from Sacramento State, initiates the offense at point guard. “We’re a small team, athletic, and we play uptempo,” St. Martin’s coach Bob Grisham said. “But we’re going against a different type of athlete.” UI guards should be prepared for a trapping defense.

Idaho: Reggie Rose, 13 ppg (in exhibitions); Shawn Dirden, 11.4 ppg (last season); Nate Gardner, 6.4 rpg (last season). St. Martin’s: Tracey Thomas, 18.5 ppg, 12.5 rpg; Mark Hunter, 10.6 ppg, 6.5 apg.

Radio: KVNI (1080 AM) Coeur d’Alene; KRPL (1400 AM) Moscow and other stations on the Vandals network.
