Last Chance To Submit Masterpiece

Speaking of poetry (see main story), the chance for getting your creative writing on the cover of Our Generation is running out.

The deadline for contributions to Our Generation’s creative writing page is Friday, so get those poems and short stories in the mail. We’ll pick some of the best to run in our Dec. 20 edition, and save the rest to use throughout the year in our “Writers’ Block” column.

Here are the rules:

1. You must be between 13 and 19 years of age.

2. Entries can be poems or short stories of no more than 1,000 words. You may also include drawings or other artwork (yours or a friend’s) to accompany your piece.

3. Only one entry per person.

4. Mail a copy of your work to Our Generation, Get Creative, 999 W. Riverside, Spokane, WA 99210-1615. Include your name, age, school, address and phone number.

Call 459-5456 if you have questions. And don’t forget, we need them by 5 p.m. Friday.

Another important deadline: Next Tuesday is the last day you can submit your entries to The Spokesman-Review’s Read & React Contest. The winner gets a free trip to Spain!

Here’s what you do: Read the newspaper and look for an article or a series of articles that spark your interest. Use the facts in the stories to form your own opinion on a subject of local, regional, national or international interest.

Submit the article along with an original editorial opinion (under 250 words) giving your views. You need an entry form, available at any S-R office or at your school counselor’s office. Call 459-5456 if you have any other questions.
