Promising CV Matchup With Kamiakin Off
Kamiakin continues to cause Central Valley grief.
First the Braves prematurely ended CV’s football season. Then they added injury to insult by qualifying for the State AAA finals at Grid Classic I in Tacoma.
Because of that, this weekend’s scheduled doubleheader between the two schools’ boys and girls basketball teams is off as well. And the games might not be played.
“The only time they have available is Jan. 6 and we have a pretty tight game schedule,” said CV boys coach Terry Irwin. “We play Wednesday, Friday, Tuesday of that week and it would give us five games in 10 days.”
It would have been an entertaining early season bill.
Kamiakin’s girls and boys each finished fourth in the State AAA basketball tournament last year.
CV’s boys and girls were both regional participants who each lost twice to Kamiakin.
Both girls teams return virtually their entire lineups. Kamiakin brings back all but one starter and 10 of 12 players from the 25-4 team.
Kamiakin’s boys were 24-5 last year.
Central Valley’s boys host Richland and the girls are in Richland on Friday to open the season.
University’s girls travel to Western Washington for weekend games against Bellevue and Issaquah. The boys are at Moses Lake on Saturday.
West Valley boys host Lake City of Coeur d’Alene on Friday at 8 p.m. The Eagle girls entertain Deer Park on Saturday.
East Valley’s boys and girls will be involved in Friday-Saturday doubleheaders, at Post Falls Friday and at home against Rogers on Saturday.
Local wrestlers debut tonight
The annual All-Valley double-dual wrestling match pitting West Valley and East Valley against Central Valley and University is 6 p.m. today at EV.
At least three of the schools have enough depth to wrestle two different athletes in most of the weight classes.
Included are 20 with regional experience, three of them state placers.
VanVoorhis heads Freeman all-stars
Speedy Jeremy VanVoorhis raced his way onto two Northeast A AllLeague first-team football squads. He was named as both a wide receiver and cornerback. Joining him on first team are Garin Friberg at tackle on offense, Brandon Miller and Marc Reed at corner and linebacker respectively on defense.
Friberg was a second-team choice on defense as was Reed at running back on offense. Also on second team were linemen Greg Dahlstrom both ways and Tobin Kruse on offense.
“Once we got into league we had a lot of kids begin to play well,” said coach John Custer of Freeman’s 3-6 season. “Jeremy really became a great playmaker.”
In the slot, he caught 20 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns, rushed 19 times for 335 yards and five more scores, ran back kickoffs for 438 yards and three TDs and had 100 more yards on punt returns.
“Our idea was to get him the ball 15 times a game,” said Custer. “Once we were in league we did so one way or another.”
Defensively, he and fellow cornerback Miller each had three interceptions. Miller had only two passes completed on him all season in straight man-to-man coverage.
“We were one play away from the playoffs,” said Custer, “and scored more points against (state semifinalist) Chewelah than anyone.”
Next year the Scotties will field solid players at the skilled positions. Miller, who had two 100-yard rushing games, returns next year. So too does quarterback Matt Smith, the 14th ranked passer in state with 911 yards and seven TDs. Ryan Bates, said Custer, turned into a good offensive and defensive threat.
The Scotties must once again find linemen.
