Residents Fearful After Shots Fired From Car Near Homes

Brian Coddington Staff Writer

Spokane Valley residents reported hearing nearly a dozen shots fired from a car that twice drove by houses in the 9600 block of East Frederick early last Thursday.

They told deputies a mid-sized car sped down the street about 1:30 a.m. Three shots were fired from the car.

At the end of the street, the car circled and raced back down the street.

“I saw a guy with his arm out the window and he had a gun in his hand,” said Tom Brosnan, who peered out the window of his home as the car turned around.

A passenger in his 20s raised the handgun straight up and fired about four more shots into the air as they drove down the street, Brosnan said.

When Brosnan went to call Crime Check, the Sheriff’s Department’s non-emergency number, he heard at least four more shots.

Brosnan was surprised to find three shell casings in the gravel next to Frederick the next morning. He thought the shots he heard were fired from a starter pistol used in a teen prank and chose not to call 911.

“If they had been shooting at the houses, 911 would’ve been the first number (I called),” Brosnan said.

Several other residents also reported hearing the shots, but no one was injured and no property was damaged, said Sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick.

But the lack of injuries or damage did nothing to temper the fear of neighbors.

“It concerns me horribly because I have small children,” said Debbie Green.

The driver of the speeding car used Green’s driveway to turn around in after coming to the end of the street.

Man assaulted, car stolen

Two men beat another man and stole his car as he tried to leave a Valley tavern Saturday.

The 34-year-old victim told deputies he left a tavern at Trent and Barker and got into his 1967 Buick Skylark about noon.

He told deputies the two men pulled him from the car, punched and kicked him and threatened to shoot him.

The man managed to get up and run from his attackers. He jumped a fence and ran into a field as the two men chased him.

The men eventually gave up and one of them drove away in the man’s car, he told deputies.

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

One of the attackers was described as 6 feet tall, 175 pounds with dark hair and blue eyes, and about 27 years old.

The other was described as 5-foot-9 and 220 pounds, with red hair and hazel eyes, and about 34 years old.

Man, boy beaten and robbed

Deputies arrested two men Sunday night after another man and a teenager were beaten and robbed of their wallets while walking along Liberty Drive.

The victims - one 20 years old and the other 15 - told deputies they were walking in the 600 block of South Liberty Drive at about 9 p.m. when a car drove by, turned around and stopped.

Three men got out of the car and demanded money.

The 20-year-old gave them his wallet and the 15-year-old handed over a small amount of cash.

A fight ensued and one of the men kicked the 20-year-old in the back. The robbers then fled in the car.

The victims were able to get the license plate number and reported it to deputies.

Deputies stopped a car a short time later at Arden Road and Olympic Avenue and arrested Kashmir A. Richardson, 20, and Timothy D. Smith, 18. They were each charged with two counts of second-degree robbery.

Deputies found a pellet gun inside their car, Wiyrick said.

Deputies are still searching for the third suspect, he said.

Two arrested on drug charges

Deputies arrested two people on drug charges last Thursday after stopping the car they were riding in for a traffic violation and finding methamphetamines in the car.

James L. Wilson IV, 19, of Spokane, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for possession of a controlled substance.

Ann M. Kendall, 19, also of Spokane, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and an outstanding warrant.

Deputies stopped the car near near Sprague Avenue and Girard Road about 2:30 a.m.

Wilson and Kendall were passengers in the car. The driver was not involved and was released.
