Cal Shuts Out WSU In Women’s Soccer

Rachel Davidson’s unassisted goal at 33 minutes Saturday lifted host California to a 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference women’s soccer win over Washington State at Berkeley.

Davidson scored her team-high fourth goal by dribbling in from center and firing a high shot from 22 yards out.

Cal (1-1-0, 5-3-1) hasn’t lost to the Cougars in six meetings. WSU (1-2-0, 2-6-1) has lost three 1-0 matches this year and has been shut out in two consecutive matches.

Brandy Putt and Megan Keaty scored unassisted goals 2 minutes apart in the second half as Gonzaga beat host Wyoming 2-0 in a nonconference match at Laramie.

Putt dribbled into the box and scored off Cowboys goalkeeper Cari Luppold. Keaty picked up a loose ball after a corner kick. Amy Dorsett of the Bulldogs recorded the shutout with just three saves.

Cree DeWitt scored with 2 minutes left in the second overtime as host Pacific Lutheran notched a 2-2 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges tie with Whitworth at Tacoma.

The Pirates (2-0-1, 7-4-1) had taken a lead 5 minutes earlier on a Taryn Nishibun feed to Haley Nichols. Nichols also assisted on Joy Cullen’s first-half goal.

Whitworth had four breakaways toward the end of regulation, but couldn’t score.

At Spokane Falls Community College, Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Columbia Basin 2-1 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match. No details were reported.

Men’s soccer

John Andonian’s insurance goal from 6 yards out capped Whitworth’s 2-0 NCIC win over visiting Linfield.

Andonian’s goal came on passes from Joon Kang and Craig Ito. Whitworth scored late in the first half on Andres Atencio’s goal.

Doug Birdtail and Clayton Tho mas scored four goals apiece in CCS’ 16-0 NWAACC rout of Grays Harbor at Spokane Falls.

Birdtail, Jeremy Stuart and Kenny Krestian had two assists apiece. Adrian Reyes and Tim Gallagher scored two goals apiece. Grays Harbor, a second-year team, was outshot 51-3.

Women’s tennis

The WSU doubles team of Linette Visage and Andrea Reisz beat Karina Kuregian and Yana Dorodnova of Kansas State 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 in a consolation match at the T.Rowe Price national clay court championships in Baltimore.

Reisz stayed alive in consolation singles with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win over Heather Greene of South Carolina.

Cross country

The WSU women finished seventh and the Cougars men ninth at the Mountain West Classic in Missoula.

WSU’s women scored 168 points, led by the 28th-place finish of Kristin Liebich, who finished the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 16 seconds. Arizona won with 28 points, led by champion Amy Skierebz (20:40).

George Loucaides of the WSU men finished ninth, running the 8,000 in 24:53, 6 seconds behind Matt Davis of Oregon and Mead High. The Cougars scored 246, winner Brigham Young 58. Two-time Olympic marathon runner Ed Eyestone won in 23:57.
