Light Up Your Life With Personal Flashlight

Michael Hodgson Special To Outdoors

Product: Hi-Gain 250 Personal Flashlight.

Description: An 8-ounce, 3.5-inch-square, 1-inch-thick flashlight with belt clip and 360 degree rotating handle. Uses four AA batteries.

Pro: The A.B.S. plastic body is very rugged, surviving numerous drops (some intentional, some not) with only a chip or two to show for the rough handling. The beam is very focused and bright, much brighter than comparable weight and sized flashlights, thanks to a special, patented Hi-Gain Optics lens.

The light from the bulb is projected through the lens, rather than reflected from a mirrored surface like those found in traditional lights.

The ratcheted rotating handle works as a handle (carry the light rather like a railroad engineer) or as a stand. The belt clip allows for hands-free use and attaches the flashlight easily to a pocket, headband, belt or hat. Rain, snow or sleet aren’t going to prevent the use of the light as it is housed in a very water-resistant casing. Push-button on and off switch is easy to use, and yet not so easy that it pops on inadvertently in a pack, tackle or tool box.

Con: No spare bulb provided. The T-1 1/4, 4.8 v, .3 amp miniature replacement bulb is not readily available unless you go to a store with a wide selection of bulbs - not typical fare for a Mom & Pop store off the beaten path.

It would be a simple thing for Diamond Light (Mag light does it) to provide a spare bulb and storage clip inside the casing as there is plenty of room. I purchased two spare bulbs and have placed them, each stored in a piece of foam, in the space available in the two corners of the casing.

I would recommend you do the same. Also, I would like the beam to be adjustable from wide to focused.

Comments: Sure it looks funky. Tradition holds that flashlights for real outdoors types must be cylindrical. Forget the looks though because this flashlight performs and delivers the brightest light for the package I have ever seen. As far as flashlights go, I rate this a double thumbs up, best-buy product.
