Faster Than A Speeding Bullet…

Paul Wille Lewis And Clark

The Death and Return of Superman SNES Sunsoft $74.99

The famed comic book hero Superman is back, or is he?

In “The Death and Return of Superman,” our hero is out to save Metropolis from Doomsday, the ominous villain who is out to get Metropolis. You get to fight Doomsday in the second level, and if you win - here’s the weird part - it will be fatal to both of you. But dying allows you to pass on to the next level.

Sound confusing? It helps to know the story of Superman’s death from the comic book. Superman got into a fight with Doomsday and supposedly died. Four people come back and claim to be Superman. The point of the game is to play each of the guys and figure out which one is the real Superman.

In the following level, you come back as the Cyborg, a half-man, halfmachine Superman who uses punches and kicks to take control of Cadmus. Then the Eradicator, another poser, takes to the streets of Metropolis. Here he fights the Man of Steel, the third man to pose as Superman.

After the fight, if you win, the Man of Steel and the Eradicator agree to keep the peace in Metropolis together when suddenly Coast City, a neighboring burg, is attacked and destroyed by aliens!

The Eradicator goes there to inspect the damage when he is attacked by the Cyborg, who turns out to be the leader of this force. Even after beating him, the Eradicator is killed.

Then we meet the final poser, Superboy. He also starts out on the streets of Metropolis and also takes a trip to the former Coast City, now Engine City. He is captured by the Cyborg and is taken inside Engine City and finds out the evil plans of the Cyborg, who is planning to take over the world!

Will the real Superman return? Will the Cyborg be successful? To find out the answer to these questions, I would definitely play “The Death and Return of Superman,” a superb game.

Stick with this game, it’s a tough one but worth it in the end.
