Secondary Bolstered By Gunn’s Return

Jim Meehan Staff Writer

Cornerback Arnold Gunn has returned to the Idaho secondary, freeing up the move of Antoine Chambers to challenge Tommy James at strong safety.

Chambers had filled in after Gunn injured his shoulder in the season opener against Oregon State.

Gunn will start at corner on Saturday against Montana State in Bozeman.

Football coach Chris Tormey said the strong safety position is open.

Point of emphasis

Tormey was disappointed with the play of his offensive line in Saturday’s loss at Idaho State.

“The real disappointing thing to me is we weren’t able to protect the quarterback better, particularly against the four-man rush,” Tormey said. “There were a number of times if (quarterback) Brian (Brennan) could have had just another second some guys were open. A number of times we got beat one-on-one.”

Big game

Tormey stopped just shy of calling Montana State a must-win game. Idaho is 1-2, 0-1 in Big Sky play.

“I’m not saying that (it’s a must win) right now,” Tormey said. “I know we need to win. Our players know we need to win.”

Thomas tough

Tormey was still marveling on Tuesday about the toughness of running back Joel Thomas, who played three quarters with a broken foot against Idaho State.

X-rays showed Thomas suffered a broken bone, about the size of a fingertip, in his left foot.

“The bone is broken completely off and floating in his foot,” Tormey said. “It’s just amazing he could play the rest of the game with it.”

Thomas does meet NCAA requirements as far as being able to receive a medical redshirt. That decision will be made at a later date.
