Dorothy Davis Spokane

Memorial service for Dorothy M. Davis, 48, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 51. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., Mrs. Davis died Tuesday.

She had lived in Spokane for 40 years and was a pest exterminator.

She was a member of VFW Post No. 51 Ladies Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 45 of Spokane.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Park and Bobbi Jo Kuhl; one son, Norman Koch; her mother, Mary Witham; one brother, Kenneth Davis; five sisters; Frances Makarczyk, Jacqueline Hone, Georganne Dahlen, Adele Ducharme and Tina Melendez; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jessie Fitzpatrick Kirkland, Wash.

Graveside service for Jessie M. Fitzpatrick, 91, was held Wednesday at Evergreen-Washelli Cemeteries in Seattle.

Born in Nelson, British Columbia, Mrs. Fitzpatrick died Monday at Lake-Vue Gardens Convalescent Center in Kirkland. She had lived there for the past 6-1/2 years.

She moved to Spokane in 1919 and was an insurance sales representative for the American Automobile Association of Spokane until she was in her 80s.

She had been president of the Goodwill Industries Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the Salvation Army and March of Dimes. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church in Spokane.

Her husband, Thomas Fitzpatrick, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Sally Fitzpatrick Cope of Seattle; one sister, Edith Whitney of Silverdale, Wash.; and one granddaughter.

Forest W. Mumau Colville, Wash.

Service for Forest W. Mumau, 93, is set for 11 a.m. today at Colville Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Colville. Danekas Funeral Chapel of Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mumau died Monday.

He was born in Unionville, Pa. He moved to Colville with his family in 1910.

He and his wife, Rachel, lived in Eugene, Ore., for five years. In 1931 they moved back to Colville, where they operated the Mumau Dairy until 1967.

They continued to farm at Colville.

Mr. Mumau was a member of the Free Methodist Church and White Lake Grange.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rachel Mumau; two sons, Howard Mumau and John Mumau, both of Colville; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Harold Smick St. John, Wash.

Private graveside service for Harold Smick, 76, will be at 11:30 a.m. today at McAbee Cemetery in Sprague, Wash. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smick, who was born near Dusty, Wash., died Monday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

He graduated from high school in Colfax. He was a real estate broker and farmer in the St. John area.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Shirley Smick; one daughter, MaryAnn Vance of Ventura, Calif.; one son, Jeff Smick of Federal Way, Wash.; one brother, Charles Smick of Ritzville, Wash.; two sisters, Louise Rhoades of Issaquah, Wash., and Mae Moore of Weiser, Idaho; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Emergency Medical Technicians or the St. John Golf Club.

Norma Shields Spokane

Service for Norma L. Shields, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Fir Lane Funeral Home in Spanaway, Wash. Burial will be at Fir Lane Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shields, who was born in Esmond, N.D., died Monday.She was a homemaker and a 45-year Spokane resident.

She was a member of Hillyard Senior Center and Sinto Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband, John Shields; two sons, Richard and Terry Shields, both of Spokane; one daughter, Donna Rae Meyer of North Bend, Wash.; four sisters, Mary Ann Zurfluh of Olympia, Lois Siefkes of Seattle, Beverly Phillips of Tacoma and Carol Sue Blattner of Vancouver, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Lucille Gain Coeur d’Alene

Service for Lucille Barkley Gain, 68, will be at a later date in Pittsfield, Ill. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gain, who was born in Pittsfield, died Tuesday at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene.

She was raised and educated in Pittsfield, graduating from high school there. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., and later married Phillip Gain.

They moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1956.

She worked as an office manager for various area auto dealers before retiring in the mid-1980s. She enjoyed golf, arts and crafts, and spending time at Sanders Beach in Coeur d’Alene.

Survivors include a son, Gregg of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Rory Mueller of Ann Arbor, Mich.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Richard Smith Spokane

Service for Richard Ray Smith, 54, is set for noon today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Burial will follow on family property near Priest River, Idaho.

Mr. Smith, who died Sunday, was a lifetime Spokane resident, and had worked as office manager of Applied Business Inc.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Claudia; three daughters, Valerie Bushey, Heather Roszina and Gretchan Smith, all of Spokane; two sons, Jason and Adam Smith, both of Spokane; two stepsons, Mark and Gene Vent, both of Spokane; one sister, Raenaida Smith of Newport; two brothers, Douglas Smith of Wallace and Norman Smith of Priest River; and six grandchildren.

Raymond Dschaak Bayview, Idaho

Memorial service for Raymond Dschaak, 74, will be at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dschaak, who died Friday, was born in Golden Valley, N.D.

He was raised in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana and moved to Spokane in 1947. He worked for Kaiser Aluminum at Mead before retiring in 1977, when he moved to Bayview.

He was a member of the Steelworkers Union and the Eagles Lodge.

His first wife, Alberta Dschaak, died in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Nyborg Dschaak; two sons, Timothy Dschaak of Loon Lake, Wash., and Raymond Dschaak of Spokane; one daughter, Gayleana Dschaak of Spokane; three stepsons, Warren Nyborg of Kirkland, Wash., and Wayne and Daniel Nyborg, both of Pinehurst, Idaho; three stepdaughters, Juanita Yrjana of Kellogg, Karen Larsen of Bayview and Loretta Phelps of Hayden Lake, Idaho; four sisters, Eleanora Arnold of Wenatchee, Nama Kiehn of San Jose, Calif., Gladys Williams of Chattaroy and Betty Clary of Enumclaw, Wash; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

W.R. ‘Bob’ VanLeuven Spokane

Memorial service for W.R. “Bob” VanLeuven, 86, be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment.

Mr. VanLeuven, who died Monday, was born in Opportunity.

He taught school in Rainier and Oroville, Wash., and moved to Spokane in 1939. He taught math and science at Libby Junior High and Garry Junior High in Spokane.

He retired from Spokane School District 81 in 1974.

He married Mabel VanLeuven in in Spokane 1939. She died in 1988.

Survivors include one son, Bob VanLeuven of Spokane; four daughters, Stephanie Luanne VanLeuven of Steilacoom, Wash.; Karen Schiffner, Kathy Toguchi Spencer and Patti Bethel, all of Spokane; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Foundation.

Richard Ross Spokane

Robert Ross Jr. Mountain Home, Idaho

Joint memorial service for brothers Richard R. Ross and Robert L. Ross Jr., will be at noon Friday at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements and cremation.

They both died Friday.

Richard died in a house fire. Robert died from a gunshot wound.

Richard, 46, was born in Spokane, and graduated from University High School. He had worked at George Gee Pontiac for 3-1/2 years.

Robert, 37, was born in Spokane and also graduated from University High School.

He served in the Air Force for 16 years and retired as a master sergeant last July.

Robert is survived by his wife, Linda Ross of Mountain Home; and one stepson, Donald Sedano of Spokane.

The brothers are both survived by their mother, Ruth Ross of Spokane; and two sisters, Barbara Janosky of Spokane and Becky Toombs of Mukilteo, Wash.

James Spring Spokane

Memorial service for James D. Spring, 69, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spring died Sunday.

He was born in Spokane.

Mr. Spring retired as a real estate broker and had owned Equity Brokers of Spokane. He lived in Spokane for 55 years and served in the Marine Corps.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Dorothy; three sons, Joe Spring of Colbert, Steven Spring of Chattaroy, and Jeffrey Spring of Redmond, Wash.; one brother, Russel Spring of Spokane; one sister, Kathryn Jamieson of Mead; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Dessie Hodson Chico, Calif.

Service for Dessie D. Hodson, 89, is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Hodson, a former Spokane resident, died Friday in Chico, where she had lived for the past 10 months.

Mrs. Hodson was born in Deer Lodge, Mont.

She graduated from high school in Lakeview, Ore., and from Monmouth Normal College near Salem, Ore.

Mrs. Hodson taught school for 30 years, including many years at Bryant Elementary School.

She was a 50-year resident of Spokane.

Her husband, Lester Hodson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one sister, Tannis Osborn of Corning, Calif.
