Panther Harriers Outrun 3rd-Place Saxons

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

The significance of Mead High’s boys victory at the SunFair Invitational should not be lost on area cross country teams.

The Panthers won three flights to score a convincing victory over third-place Ferris, 19 points to 62, in the meeting of Greater Spokane League favorites.

What it revealed was that Mead’s pack was tighter than the opposition’s, which is an advantage for a young team whose predecessors won seven straight state championships.

No. 5 through No. 7 runners David Green, Lee Hodin and Damon Ristau fueled the victory with their flight wins, and other Panthers were among the top finishers in their races.

The Panthers and Saxons won’t decide the GSL until the season’s final meet Oct. 18 at Whitworth College.

The gathering football storm

This week is the lull before the storm for most North Side football teams.

Mead meets Gonzaga Prep Oct. 19, in all probability for a playoff spot.

Barring an upset, Mead should have only one loss, by a touchdown to CV, but the Panthers can’t take anything for granted.

Last week’s game against University proved that.

Mead won, 14-7, with the Titans on the Panther goal line as time expired.

Mead plays fellow North Side team North Central Friday and Ferris the following week.

In the Northeast A League, coleader Lakeside has two dates before a possible first-place game, Oct. 20 at Chewelah.

Frontier League team Riverside lost for the first time last week and is hoping to regroup at home against Clarkston on Friday.

Volleyball race is on

Time is running out on Greater Spokane League volleyball teams jockeying to finish among the league’s top six.

Most intriguing may be the sixth-place race, where Mead has a two-game lead over Shadle Park.

Mead is hoping to stave off the Highlanders down the stretch.

Shadle must win most of its games, including three against current top-five teams.

Mead also plays three of the league’s top teams and the Highlanders.

North Central, which rallied behind Aimee Wilson to win three straight games against University, moved nearer a playoff berth.

After losing the first two games and down to the final two points in a third last Saturday against the Titans, NC made the improbable comeback.
