Two Teams On Quests To Break Streaks
If you need a reason to take in a high school football game Friday, at least two contests - Sandpoint at Coeur d’Alene and Bonners Ferry at Lakeland - provide several intriguing subplots.
Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint, for example, will be out to snap streaks against longtime rivals. Bonners Ferry hasn’t beaten Intermountain League power Lakeland since 1982 (13 straight defeats), while one must go back to 1977 (17 straight losses) to find the last time Sandpoint defeated Coeur d’Alene.
Coeur d’Alene (1-4 overall) opens Inland Empire League play when Sandpoint (1-0, 4-1) comes to town Friday, and the Vikings are starving for a win. The Bulldogs can clinch no worse than third and one of the league’s three state playoff berths with a win.
Bonners Ferry (0-1, 2-3) travels to Lakeland (2-0, 3-2) needing a win to stay in the state playoff hunt. Lakeland, tied for first with idle St. Maries, could suffer a loss in its drive for a postseason invitation.
The two key games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
In another IEL game, Lewiston (0-1, 4-1) goes to Lake City (0-1, 0-5). In another IML contest, Moscow (1-0, 4-1) is host to much-improved Kellogg (1-2, 2-3-1).
Elsewhere, Colville, Wash., (1-3) is at Post Falls (5-0), Priest River (3-3) goes to Wallace (3-2-1) and Clark Fork (1-4 in league, 1-4 overall) visits Lakeside (4-1, 5-1). In an game that was changed from Friday to this afternoon, North Star League-leading Mullan (4-0, 4-0) travels to Falls Christian (3-2, 4-2) at 3.

Overlooked in Clark Fork’s 55-38 loss last week to Falls Christian in a North Star League eight-man football game was a reception by Carla Haller.
Haller, a junior tight end who has seen spot duty in her first season on varsity both offensively and defensively, hauled in a 24-yard pass.
“She caught it and ran about 14 yards,” Wampus Cats coach Frank Hammersley said. “She got us the first down when we needed it, and made some good tackles.”
At defensive end, Haller had two solo tackles and assisted in three others in about 16 minutes of playing time.
Pro drives for dough
Former Lakeland High School standout athlete and current LPGA rookie Tracy Hanson will returns home this week to help her alma mater raise money for its boys and girls golf program.
A 9-hole fund-raising tournament for Lakeland golfers will be held Saturday afternoon at Twin Lakes Village Golf Course. The format will be a 5-person scramble. The tourney begins at 3.
Entry fee is $10 per person plus greens fee.
Hanson, who last weekend tied for second in the rookie point standings in the final LPGA event of the season, will be on the 8th tee where she’ll hit a golfer’s drive for $1.
Anyone interested in playing should call the Twin Lakes pro shop at 687-1311.
Once a Vik always a …
Former Eastern Washington University and Coeur d’Alene High basketball standout Keri Schwenke has turned down Lake City girls basketball coach Dave Stockwell’s offer as an assistant coach.
Schwenke agonized over the decision all summer, Stockwell said. But she gave Stockwell her decision Monday.
Schwenke, the junior varsity volleyball coach at CdA, will coach a freshmen girls team at CdA this winter. She’ll also assist softball coach Larry Bieber next spring.
“Coaching together is something we’ve talked about since she went to college,” Stockwell said.
Stockwell has a couple of candidates for the JV position, but may end up coaching both the varsity and JV himself.

Nike has produced several creative, thought-provoking T-shirts. But one about running caught our eye at the Farragut Invitational cross country meet. It had the following message: “How’s my running? 1-900-Eat-Dust!”
Another T-shirt with an interesting running motto: “Run hard, Run fast, Run naked.”
