Bears, Titans Ramble To Victory CV Races Past Shadle Park; University Thunders Rogers

The way things went at Albi Stadium, the Central Valley and University football teams probably ran back to the Valley on Thursday night, plowing over the city-limit sign on the way home.

The sixth-ranked Bears racked up 248 yards rushing on the way to a 34-21 win over Shadle Park and then the Titans piled up 258 yards while dumping Rogers 42-7.

The Greater Spokane League doubleheader drew 2,927 fans.

Giorgio Usai, the league’s rushing leader, had 159 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries for CV, and Tim Buchanan had 156 yards and two scores on 24 carries for the Titans.

But the best run of the night belonged to Jeff Hollenbach.

The 225-pound U-Hi lineman scooped up a Rogers fumble and rumbled 41 yards for a third-quarter touchdown that put the Titans up 28-7.

“It was a dream come true,” said Hollenbach, who usually opens holes for Buchanan on offense and doubles as a defensive end. “I’ve been dreaming about that for a long time.”

Just to prove it wasn’t - or maybe was - an accident, Hollenbach picked up another fumble and went 18 yards to the Rogers 9 later in the quarter, setting up another TD.

“I was thinking about running that one back, too, but I broke the wrong way,” Hollenbach said. “No one ever told me I looked like a running back.”

The University win was impressive because the Titans dropped a disappointing 14-7 decision to Mead a week ago. A win in that game would have kept their playoff destiny in their own hands.

“We try not to think of the last game, we try to look ahead,” Hollenbach said. “We tried to bounce back and make a good showing. We’re still in it. We just have to hope a few things happen in the league and we’re right back in it.”

Tonight at Albi, North Central tackles Mead at 5:45 and Gonzaga Prep faces Lewis and Clark at 8:30. Ferris goes to Richland for a non-league game.
