Local Authors Will Receive Governor’s Writers Awards

Gov. Mike and Mary Lowry will honor several Washington authors with the 1995 Governor’s Writers Awards Oct. 27 at the Northwest Bookfair in Olympia.

Inland Northwest writers to be honored are Ursula Hegi, Nine Mile Falls, for “Stones from the River,” New York: Simon & Schuster Publishers; and Jack Nisbet, Spokane, for “Sources of the River: Tracking David Thompson Across Western North America,” Seattle: Sasquatch Books.

Rex and Barbara Reed, managers of the Sir Speedy center in Spokane received the company’s Century Club Award for extraordinary sales and customer service during 1994.

Ed Sulpezio, member of the Melvin M. Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps League, received the Legion of Honor medal from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains.

The honor is given for selfless service to community, nation or humanity without regard to race, religion or creed. Sulpezio, the first Spokane resident to receive this award, joins notables Bob Hope and the late Martha Raye.

LeighAnna Drake, Spokane, has received a $1,000 scholarship from the publishers of The National Dean’s List. She attends Eastern Washington University.

Kristi Landwehr, 6, daughter of Tom and Kasey Landwehr, Spokane, won the Miss Washington American Princess Hostess title at the annual state pageant in Seattle. She will represent Washington at the National Miss American Princess Pageant next month in Florida. Kristi is a student at Mullan Road Elementary.

Andrea Waters, 5, daughter of Ed and Pam Waters, Spokane, was second runner-up finalist for Miss Photogenic at the Miss Washington American Princess Pageant held recently in Seattle.

Eric Dean Corwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Corwin, has received his Eagle Scout Award. He is a member of Troop 80 in Colbert and a 1995 honors graduate of Mead High School. His service project was to refurbish the entrance to the Camelot subdivision.

Terrie Roberts, a certified purchasing manager at Gonzaga University, received the Bill Peacock Award of Merit given by the National Association of Purchasing Management. She is a graduate of North Central High School and is finishing her bachelors degree at GU.

Gregory Preuss, Mead, an agency specialist for the Aid Association for Lutherans, has earned life membership in the Million Dollar Round Table. The award is for top life insurance representatives, based on outstanding insurance sales. He is an associate of the Scott Schuldt Agency in Spokane.

Frederick Peterson, director of academic affairs at Washington State University at Spokane, recently returned from a monthlong institute, “Congress and American Democracy: An Institute on Teaching about the Constitution.” He served as director of academic affairs and lecturer at the national institute. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: 3 Photos
