Bulldogs Fall To Visiting Cal Poly-Slo

Visiting Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo edged Gonzaga University 2-1 Friday at Martin Field in a non-conference women’s soccer match.

Cal Poly-SLO scored the first two goals and held on.

Michelle Nuesca took a cross pass from Megan Lehtonen and put a shot into the left side of the net at 33:00.

Two minutes later, Shawna Stickle gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

Brenda Putt scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal at the 37-minute mark.

With the loss, Gonzaga fell to 1-10-0. Cal Poly-SLO is 7-1-1.

The match was the only action of the week for the Bulldogs, who will play at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah next weekend.

Volleyball

Cheryl Hovde recorded four kills and 25 assists to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane past Northwest College 15-8, 15-0, 15-5 in a non-conference matchup at Spokane Falls CC.

Laurie Peters had seven kills and six digs for the Sasquatch.

Northwest College was paced by Jackie Creamer’s four kills and Steph Baller’s 31 assists. Marlo Hutchison added 12 digs.

As a team, CCS amassed 10 service aces and 34 kills. The Sasquatch moved their record to 15-11.

At Santa Clara, Cari Wehner tallied 10 digs and 37 assists to lift Santa Clara past Gonzaga 15-7, 15-11, 15-12.

Lisa Tozi had 11 kills and Jamie Elson added six blocks for the Broncos. With the win, Santa Clara’s record improved to 2-1 in the West Coast Conference, and 5-12 overall.

Wendy Wilson had 13 kills for the Bulldogs, while teammate Nicole Lamoure had 39 assists.

Gonzaga led 5-0 in the third game before Santa Clara rallied to win. The Bulldogs fell to 0-3, 2-11.

Gonzaga will play another conference game tonight at St. Mary’s.

Golf

Mark Rohde qualified for the PGA Club Pro Championship that began Thursday in Palm Springs, Calif. Rohde was the only Eastern Washington golfer to qualify last month at the Pacific Northwest sectionals.
