Vandals Topple Host Lumberjacks

Tzvetelina Yanchulova had all 20 of her kills in the final three games Saturday as visiting Idaho (4-1, 15-4) defeated Northern Arizona 12-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-8 in a Big Sky Conference match at Flagstaff.

Louisa Kawulok added 10 kills (on just one error) and six blocks for the Vandals, who host Montana on Friday and attempt their 40th consecutive home win.

Kristal Blair had 14 kills for the Lumberjacks (4-2, 8-6), who hit 099.

A night after its first loss of the year, seventh-ranked Washington State (6-1, 14-1) rode the 17 kills and five blocks of Sarah Silvernail to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-4 scorching of visiting Cal in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Pullman.

Elis Arias added 17 digs and eight kills, and Stephanie Papke 37 assists and two aces for the Cougars, who lost to fourth-ranked Stanford in five games on Friday. Louella Lovely led the Bears (3-5, 7-7) with 18 assists and six digs.

Kaya Allen’s 11 digs and two aces helped Community Colleges of Spokane (16-11) to a 15-1, 15-9, 15-4 nonleague win over North Idaho College at Spokane Falls.

Cheryl Hovde had 22 assists, Stephanie Short nine aces and Jenni Rosselli four blocks for the Sasquatch.

Cross country

Tara Carlson led the University of Washington to the women’s title at the Sundodger Invitational at Seattle.

Carlson completed the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 7.73 seconds, nearly 2 seconds ahead of Michigan’s Pauline Arnill. Fifth-place Emily Johnson (17:34.98) of University High was second for the Huskies, who scored 29 points to the 53 of Michigan.

Club Northwest won the men’s invitational title, edging the Huskies 44-58. Champion Uli Steidl of Portland finished the 8,000 in 24:44.84.Nick Rogers (25:54.07), in 20th, was the top finisher for seventh-place EWU. GU was 10th, led by Jon Neill (26:13.09) in 30th.

The men’s open division went to the University of Victoria, with 79 points, and Clay Wing (26:05.72) of Western Washington. Tim Panckhurst (27:06.54), in 19th, led North Idaho College to fifth, with Todd Bruce (27:09.68) and Mike McQueen (27:10.49) close behind.

Club Northwest, with 33 points, won the women’s open. Margaret Butler (18:06.40) of Norwesters Track Club was the champ. Gini Lehrman (19:48.37), in 30th, was tops for ninth-place NIC.

Women’s soccer

Jennifer Tissue scored twice and guided Whitworth (4-0-1) to first place in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges with a 2-1 win over visiting Willamette.

The Pirates are 7-4-1 overall, 7-1-1 in their last nine matches.

The match was scoreless through 37 minutes until midfielder Joy Cullen fed Tissue.

Kim Rasmussen scored off Erin Johnson’s indirect kick midway through the second half and Kim McArdle made 24 saves as Shoreline edged CCS 1-0 in an NWAACC match at Seattle.

CCS had nearly three times as many shots on goal but McArdle was tough, especially on good late tries by Nicole Hayes and Heather Wolfe.

Men’s soccer

Joe Hansonton scored the first and third goals as Pacific Lutheran beat visiting Whitworth 3-0 in an NCIC match at Tacoma.

The Pirates started tentatively and didn’t begin a decent passing attack until the second half. By then, the Lutes had a 2-0 lead on Thomas Everson’s unassisted goal at 38 minutes.
