Dodgers Retain Lasorda

Three days after finishing what he called his toughest playoff experience ever, Tom Lasorda agreed to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers for a 20th season.

“I’m very, very happy and very appreciative,” the 48-year-old Lasorda said after agreeing to a one-year extension. “You never know what’s going to happen. All I was waiting for was a call from (Dodgers owner) Peter (O’Malley) and (general manager) Fred (Claire) to let me know what direction they were going to go in.”

Kevin McClatchy huddled with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ bankers in another effort to regain exclusive negotiating rights to buy the team.

McClatchy, who is lining up additional investors even as he negotiates, also met with U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who promised to help McClatchy speed through baseball’s complex approval process if he makes a deal.

The Chicago White Sox acquired relief pitcher Jeff Darwin from Seattle as the player to be named later in the July trade that sent outfielder Warren Newson to the Mariners.
