Panhandle Picks With Greg Lee
It finally happened. A guest finally beat yours truly.
Last week’s guest, Coeur d’Alene police chief Dave Scates, should have had me arrested for impersonating a prognosticator.
I had a horrible week. The saving grace is at least I kept from dipping below .500. by picking four of eight games correctly. Scates had five correct picks.
Fortunately, I still have what should prove to be an insurmountable lead on the guests. Going into the seventh week, the scoreboard reads: Lee 49-11 (.817), Guests 41-19 (.683).
It’s rebound week. This week’s guest is longtime St. Maries booster and retired St. Maries teacher Bob Marzulli.
“Marz,” as he’s affectionately called in St. Maries, is the kind of booster every town needs. There’s no task too big, no task too small for Marzulli when it comes to students and athletes.
But Bob is taking me on at the wrong time of the season - especially after last week’s embarrassing showing.
GAME OF THE WEEK
The Lakeland-St. Maries game is the first of three key Intermountain League games for the undefeated Lumberjacks. It’s the second of three key games for the Hawks.
Lakeland’s four-game winning streak will come to an end at St. Maries. The Lumberjacks have more offensive weapons than the Hawks, and the defenses cancel each other out.
The two times St. Maries has won league titles under coach Curt Carr it has defeated Lakeland.
The Lumberjacks will have to self-destruct and the Hawks play an error-free game for an upset to occur. Don’t count on it. St. Maries 28, Lakeland 14.
Guest: This is going to be a tough game, but I think it’s St. Maries’ turn for a win. St. Maries 24, Lakeland 14.
Coeur d’Alene at Lewiston: This game features teams seemingly headed in opposite directions. Lewiston is headed up and Coeur d’Alene continues to spiral downward.
The Bengals may be looking toward the state playoffs and a rematch with Post Falls, but they won’t forget to take care of matters at hand.
The Vikings still have an outside hope at a playoff berth, but would be eliminated with a loss at Lewiston. The Bengals keep rolling … Lewiston 34, CdA 14.
Guest: Lewiston has too many horses for an injured Coeur d’Alene team. Lewiston 35, CdA 6.
Lake City at Post Falls: It seems Lake City never catches any team at a good time, and it won’t be any different for the Timberwolves on Friday.
Post Falls’ pride was bruised when the Trojans lost to a team they should have beaten last week - Colville.
The Trojans must start fine tuning for the postseason, and the T-Wolves will find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Post Falls 40, Lake City 6.
Guest: This will not be the game for Lake City’s first win. Post Falls 40, Lake City 14.
