Gsl At A Glance

U-Hi 30, NC 0

Key play

Casey Cornelius hit Kurt Moore on a deep post pattern on the first play of the Titans’ second possession and the 50-yard score made it 14-0 less than 5 minutes into the game. Joe Jeffries turned a short out into a 45-yard gain on the game’s third play, stepping out of bounds on the 7. That set the tone.

Stars of the game

It was end Mike Clark’s turn to return a fumble for a defense that posted a shutout. Cornelius had 160 yards passing in the first half alone and Jeffries had seven catches for 115 yards.

Notable

The Titans played without standout linebacker/running back Jason Daniel , who broke his right fibula last week. His replacement on defense, Justin Chissus suffered what coaches are afraid is the same injury early in the second half…. North Central had 2 yards of total offense in the first half…. The four-man referee crew was from Tacoma. They called one 5-yard penalty in the first half. The second penalty didn’t come until the third minute of the third quarter. NC was called for pass interference and on the next play, U-Hi’s Tim Buchanan lost a 37-yard run because of a holding penalty. There were five flags in the first game. The crew also worked the second game, drawing rave reviews from GSL coaches.

Next opponents

In Friday’s first Albi game, NC (0-4, 0-5) faces Central Valley (6-0) and in the late game it’s U-Hi(3-2, 3-3) against Shadle Park (1-3, 1-4).

CV 31, G-Prep 20

Key plays

Clinging to a 17-14 lead, CV faced a third-and-9 at the Prep 45 late in the third quarter when quarterback R.J. DelMese dumped the ball over the middle and tight end Jeff Allen turned the play into a 22-yard gain. The Bears cashed in four plays later with a 2-yard TD run by Giorgio Usai.

Stars of the game

Once again (and again and again), Usai had a big game. CV’s mighty might running back was over 100 yards in the first half and a 43-yard run on the first play of the second half put him over 1,000. Huge sophomore noseguard Will Beck was the most visable defensive player, consistenly putting huge licks on Prep sophomore quarterback Kevin O’Connell.

Notable

The Bears Beck, who weighs 264 pounds, in the offensive backfield on short-yardage plays in the first half. Usai followed him into the end zone for CV’s first TD. That was Usai’s 15th TD and with an earlier two-point conversion, gave him 92 points for the season, moving him into the top 10 for single-season scoring…. Prep’s only pass completion in 12 attempts was a 12-yarder at midfield as the first-half clock ran out.

Next opponents

Prep’s (2-2, 3-2) playoff hopes hinge on a 7:30 Thursday game at Albi against Mead (4-1). CV plays NC on Friday.
