Ewu Names Bill Martin As Teacher Of Month

Bill Martin, a music and mathematics teacher at Deer Park High School, has been named Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the Month.

He was nominated by student Bryann Robinson, who said Martin paid for the repair of her flute. Although her family repaid him, Robinson says, “I feel I can never thank him enough for this extremely unselfish act.”

Eight more Inland Northwest college and university students have been named to their school’s dean’s or president’s lists for the spring and summer quarters:

Jared Lyman, Spokane, and Julianna Schick, Deer Park, Utah State University.

Cathy Urbach, Spokane, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y.

Sheri Babb, Cheney, Washington State University.

Michelle Hill, Jennie Knisley, Cora Legge and Helen McConahy, all of Spokane, Phillips Junior College.

Six more Inland Northwest residents have been awarded college or university degrees:

Paul Kloehn, Spokane, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.

Diane Waryas, Spokane, Miami University.

Heather Fuller, Cheney; and Daniel Waters and Travis Brandt, both of Spokane, Central Washington University, Ellensburg.

Jeffrey Snell, Spokane, Boston University.

Results for the fourth annual Valley Hooops 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, benefiting the March of Dimes and the Valley YMCA, have been announced:

Men’s Open - Eagles Alum; Men’s Recreational 6-Foot and Under - No Skills and The Boys; Men’s Recreational 6-Foot and Over - X-Press; Student Boys (grades 10-11) - 2 Games and a T-Shirt; Student Boys (grades 8-9) - Priebe, Hoodle, McCliment; Student Boys (grades 6-7) - Blue Devils; Student Boys (grades 3-5) - Eclipse; Student Girls (grades 8-10) - The Gumbies; Free Throw Contest: Mick Jackson, first; Ryan Harris, second; and Randy Blomgrem, third. Three Point Contest: Jeff Ohman, first; Deshaun Crawford, second; and Tammy Houer, third.

Matthew Tansy, a fourth-grade student at Hamblen Elementary, was presented the God and Country Award by Cub Scout Pack 345. He is a member of Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church and the son of Raymond Jr. and Debbie Tansy, Spokane.

The Spokane County Council recently honored several residents who have contributed to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in the Spokane area.

The recipients have contributed in the area of legal and law enforcement disciplines.

The recipients are:

Larry Anderson, Joan Antoinetti, Melanie Boy, Larry Briney, Mark Callen, Sheryl Clark, Dawn Cortez, Tim Gallagher, Cynthia Jordan Anne Marie Liebhaber Sharon Saito, Lucinda Saue, Dick Sayre and Patricia Thompson.

Cheryl Wolfe; Barbara Lakewold, Pam Schindler, Margarent Walsh, Kathleen O’Conner, Philip Talmadge, David Peffer, Kart Ota, Tom Sahlberg, Burel Schulz, Nadine Larsen and Kelly Porter.

The Campaign for Human Development, the Catholic Church’s domestic anti-poverty program, gave $30,000 to Washington Rural Organizing Project of Spokane to increase membership and to conduct issues campaigns.

The organizing project is a multicultural, multi-issue grassroots organization supported by the leaders of key institutions in the region.
