The Winnipeg Jets, who joined the NHL in 1979, have been sold to an American group for $68 million and will leave Winnipeg, Manitoba, after the season.

Jets owner Barry Shenkarow said the team has been purchased by investors Richard Burke of Minneapolis and Steven Gluckstern of New York.

The NCAA rejected the University of New Mexico’s appeal on behalf of top recruit Kenny Thomas, ruled ineligible because of a science course he took as a high school freshman.

The NCAA declared Thomas ineligible because a course he took as a ninth grader at El Paso (Texas) Austin High School did not meet the requirements of the 13 required core curriculum classes for high school graduates.

German tennis star Steffi Graf, her father imprisoned on suspicion of tax evasion, has turned over management of her finances to the accounting firm Price Waterhouse.

Team Mopar drivers Darrell Alderman and Scott Geoffrion will not race on the NHRA circuit again this season, finally succumbing to continued delays in development of new engines for their Dodge Avengers.

Alderman and Geoffrion were first and second, respectively, in the pro stock driver standings, when vandals entered their Fairfield, Ill., shop May 16 and destroyed all six of the team’s engines.
