Spokane Hammers Blue Mountain In 3
Community Colleges of Spokane gave itself a shot at first place Wednesday with a 15-5, 15-3, 15-5 volleyball win over visiting Blue Mountain CC at Spokane Falls.
Lori Peters had nine kills and 11 digs, and Cheryl Hovde added 24 assists and seven digs for the Sasquatch.
CCS is 6-1 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and can tie for first place with a win at Columbia Basin on Friday.
Renee Williams and Kim Steinbruecker scored the final five points and Whitworth overcame a 12-10 fifth-game deficit to beat visiting Whitman 15-6, 11-15, 12-15, 15-9, 15-12 in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges.
Mandy Decious had 14 kills and 19 digs for the Pirates, who tied the Pioneers’ record of 1-7, 4-14.
Men’s soccer
Chris Herbert converted Matt Leonard’s indirect free kick into a goal as Whitworth edged Central Washington University 1-0 in a non-conference match at Ellensburg.
The goal came after a scoreless 55 minutes.
The Pirates (6-6-2) pulled off the win while playing numerous underclassmen.
At SFCC, Doug Birdtail scored twice and set up another goal as CCS beat Pierce CC, the No. 1 team in the NWAACC’s Southern Division.
Birdtail also had shots hit the crossbar twice. Adrian Reyes and Ryan Vanwey of the Sasquatch (5-4-2 in the Northern Division) had one goal and one assist apiece. Ryan Minor of the Raiders (5-2-4), a Mead High graduate, scored his sixth goal of the season.
Women’s soccer
Whitworth (10-4-1) moved into the NAIA national rankings for the first time this season after two weekend wins.
Whitworth, ranked 18th, will travel this weekend with a chance to clinch first place and home-field advantage through the NCIC playoffs.
The Pirates play Linfield (0-8, 1-13) Saturday. A win will set up a showdown with second-place and defending league champ Willamette (6-2, 9-4) on Sunday. A win over the Bearcats would clinch the title.
Men’s basketball
Whitworth is ranked 18th in the NAIA Division II preseason poll. The Pirates are coming off an 18-9 season and have nine players returning.Willamette is the other ranked NCIC team. The Bearcats are ranked No. 3.
