Pullman Seniors Named Students Of The Month
Kourtney Nelson and Ilyas Nuri, both seniors at Pullman High School, were named as Students of the Month for September by the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. They were nominated by the Pullman Greyhound Activities Committee.
Nelson, daughter of Doug and Virginia Nelson, Pullman, is co-president and a four-year member of the school’s athletic council and its senior class vice president. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been active on the Executive Council and Students Against Drunk Driving.
Nuri is president of the school’s Associated Student Body as well as the math and chess clubs. He is also an active member of the Knowledge Bowl, Future Problem Solvers and the National Honor Society. His guardian is Veyis Nuri.
Mark Wolf, Spokane, has been accepted to the University of Washington Medical School for the 1995-96 school year. He is a graduate of Mead Senior High School and a 1994 graduate of Whitworth College. He is the son of Larry and Gail Wolf.
Kara Covell a sophomore majoring in Spanish at Linfield College, McMinnville, Ore., is spending the fall semester in Paris. She will have one month of intensive language study followed by three months as a guest in a Parisian family home.
Brad and Nola Covell, Spokane, are her parents.
Six Gonzaga Prep. students have been named as Commended Students in the 1996 National Merit Scholarship program: Scott Collins, Jesse Gilman, Brian Herrin, Scott Ickes, Kelly Jones and Jeff Pearson.
Several Eastern Washington University faculty members have achieved recognition and honors in a variety of areas:
Ernst Gohlert, professor of government and director of international affairs, was chosen as the 1995 International Educator of the Year by the Inland Northwest World Trade Council for his contributions to international education.
Kelly Farris, professor of music and conductor of the EWU Symphony and concertmaster with the Spokane Symphony, was selected as Individual Artist for 1995 by the Spokane Arts Commission in the city of Spokane Arts Awards.
Lisa Brown, associate professor of economics, was elected majority floor leader in the Washington House of Representatives. She is representative for Spokane’s 3rd District.
Lynda Hinckley, Spokane, has been honored by Mary Kay Cosmetics as one of the company’s top achievers and was awarded the free use of a pink Pontiac Grand Prix LE Sedan. She is an independent sales director.
Alisha Powers, a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep., recently received an Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry from the National Library of Poetry. Her poem was published in “Between the Raindrops.”
She is the daughter of Geoffrey and Laurey Powers.
