Gsl At A Glance

CV 56, NC 3

Key plays

Pick one - the Bears had 27 plays from the line of scrimmage in the first half and they rolled up 305 yards and six touchdowns.

Stars of the game

Giorgio Usai set a league record with six touchdowns and the Bears finished with more than 300 yards rushing, that makes the offensive line the stars.

Notable

NC moved downfield for a late 42-yard Colin Turnbull field goal. The Indians did it with a “pole cat” offense. Five lineman and one back split wide to one side. The center is the only lineman with two receivers split to the opposite side of the linemen and the quarterback is in the shotgun. The center is eligible and Rance McCullough caught three passes for 30 yards out of the formation. “Hats off to North Central,” CV coach Rick Giampietri said. “They tried to come up with something and it was fun for our kids to play against that ‘pole cat’ offense.” … Usai now has 1,272 yards in seven games. The league record 1,558. … NC spotted CV a 14-0 lead before rallying to beat the Bears 17-14 in the last game of the season for their only win last year. The loss knocked the Bears out of undisputed second into a five-way tie for second and they lost in the playoff. … CV can win its first outright league title with a win next week. The Bears last made the playoffs in 1983 when they tied Gonzaga Prep for the league title.

U-Hi 38, Shadle 28

Key play

Considering the score was only 21-7 at halftime, the key play has to be the 21-yard field goal by University’s Kelly Tift with 51 seconds left, which finally put an end to the Highlanders’ hopes.

Stars of the game

Shawn Kingsbury almost brought the Highlanders back singlehandedly. He had just two carries for 9 yards in the first half, but finished with 221 yards on just 11 carries and had TDs of 52, 65 and 52 yards in the second half. He also was his usual force on defense. Kurt Moore, who entered the game with seven catches for 174 yards, had seven receptions for 98 yards and the final U-Hi TD.

Notable

Tift has made all 22 of his PATs in league play this year after missing his only attempt in the Titans’ season-opening nonleague loss. U-Hi has missed one PAT but that came on a bad snap from center…. U-Hi’s four league wins surpasses its total for the last two years…. The Highlanders refused to lose, spiking the ball with 2 seconds left and then completing a 56-yard pass on the final play of the game…. We hate to have to say it, but the officiating was a factor in the game. However, the gory details will have to come from the coaches or fans…. The game had 767 yards of offense, Shadle had a 98-yard kickoff return by Trevor Walters after U-Hi’s opening possession TD called back (on a good call) and U-Hi’s Joe Jeffries returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown that was also called back.

Pullman 27, Rogers 0

The Greyhounds scored all their points in the first half while holding the winless Pirates to 20 yards of total offense.

Brent Johnson rushed for 157 yards on 30 carries and had two short touchdowns in the first quarter. Scott Hayden picked off two passes, capping the scoring by returning one 22 yards for a touchdown.

Pullman finished with 158 yards passing and 164 rushing.
