Suspect Arrested In Attempted Rape

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Spokane Valley man was arrested this week on suspicion of attempted rape.

Bret R. Curtis, 27, was arrested Thursday on one count of firstdegree attempted rape, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department said.

An 18-year-old woman was walking in the area of Sprague and Vista and had accepted a ride about 4:30 a.m. Thursday from a man driving a white older-model Dodge.

He didn’t take her to the location she asked, deputies said. Instead, the man started driving to the South Hill, brandished screw drivers as weapons and threatened to kill her if she reported anything.

He stopped and attempted to sexually assault her. She struggled with him for a short time, then the suspect drove her to Denny’s on East Sprague, where they went inside, deputies said.

The victim went to the bathroom where she asked an employee to call for help. The suspect left before deputies showed up.

A deputy spotted the suspect’s car near Sprague and Fancher. He followed the car past the Denny’s restaurant. At the same time, the victim saw the car and told a deputy it was the suspect.

Deputies stopped Curtis at First and Dollar, arrested him and seized evidence from the car.
