Waldorf Takes Texas Open Lead

Duffy Waldorf shot a 6-under-par 66 after the wind died down and held a two-stroke lead over Jay Don Blake after two rounds of the Texas Open in San Antonio.

Blake shot his second straight 67 at the La Cantera Country Club course.

Kirk Triplett, formerly of Pullman, shot a second-round 74 to drop 11 shots back of the leader.

The United States was eliminated from the Dunhill Cup in St. Andrews, Scotland, despite a 2-1 victory over Sweden in the team golf competition.

Needing to win 3-0 after its loss to Ireland Thursday, Ben Crenshaw and Peter Jacobsen both shot 67s to win their matches. Although Lee Janzen rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole to tie his match with Per-Ulrik Johansson, the Swede won the match at the first extra hole.

Jim Colbert shot an opening-round, 6-under 65 to take a two-shot lead in the $800,000 Ralphs Senior PGA Classic in Los Angeles.

Weber State men’s golf coach Mac Madsen was reprimanded and suspended from the team’s next competition by the Big Sky Conference for comments he purportedly made about officials at the league’s championship tournament Oct. 7-9.
