College Guide Features University Of Idaho

The University of Idaho is featured in the Winds of Change’s 1995-96 College Guide for American Indians. The quarterly publication is associated with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society of Boulder, Colo.

UI appears in the guide’s College Cameo section that highlights 12 schools which, according to the magazine, have “a lot to offer.” UI is noted for its “commitment to women and minorities,” per the creation of a full-time coordinating position for multicultural programs staffed by Sarah Penney, a Nez Perce from Lapwai, Idaho.

Penney and the program are credited for peer advising and mentoring programs and a cultural sensitivity video produced last year. The article also spotlights UI’s recruitment and retention efforts, including the precollege summer program Upward Bound, Idaho Summer Camp and the year-round HOIST program helping Indian high school students gain admission to college.

The article also makes note of leadership provided by the school’s Indian student organizations, Native American Students Association and SWU’NMPTWA (a Spokane word meaning Grandmother Earth), the College of Forestry and Wildlife and the Range Sciences Club for Indian students interested in forestry, fisheries and natural resources.

In addition, the Student Voices section of Winds of Change features UI sophomore Iris A. Penney, a Nez Perce/Santee Sioux, studying to be an elementary teacher with an interest in special education.

Photos by UI photographer Jerry Prout appear throughout the publication.
