Former Chief Wakaluk Deals Shutout To Sabres

Former Spokane Chief Darcy Wakaluk stopped 27 shots to record his eighth career shutout, and Derian Hatcher had two assists and an outstanding game on defense as the host Dallas Stars beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 Tuesday night.

Wakaluk (2-1-2) and the Dallas penalty killers turned away Buffalo eight times with the man advantage. Wakaluk, who started his career with the Buffalo organization, had his last shutout against Anaheim last March.

Don Beaupre made 22 saves, and Tom Chorske scored off a defensive error midway through the final period as Ottawa beat Detroit.

With Beaupre and Detroit’s Mike Vernon locked in a fierce duel of goaltenders, Red Wings defenseman Bob Rouse tried a long clearing pass. But he put the puck on Chorske’s stick, and the Ottawa forward scored on a slap shot with 9:20 remaining.

Backup goaltender Glenn Healy remained undefeated, and New York got goals from five players in the victory over Vancouver.

Healy made 12 of his 23 saves in the final period after allowing a power-play goal to Dave Babych at 2:16 that drew the Canucks within 3-2. The victory gave Healy a 3-0 mark as Mike Richter’s understudy and raised the Rangers’ record to 5-3.

The victory left the third-year Panthers with 12 points, tying them with idle New Jersey for the early season lead in the Atlantic Division.
