Board Postpones Athletics Discussion Nic Trustees Will Review Recommendations Next Month

A recommendation to limit spending on intercollegiate athletics, and 10 other suggestions for North Idaho College athletics, will be discussed in a Board of Trustees workshop Nov. 11.

The board accepted the recommendations of a special committee at its Wednesday meeting, but postponed putting any of them into action.

The committee was formed after questions were raised at the college budget hearing about the amount of money being spent on athletics.

In response to taxpayer concerns, the committee called for a cap on the athletic department budget equal to 4.7 percent of the total college budget.

Other recommendations include pursuing greater gender equity by adding a women’s sport without increasing the budget.

The committee also agreed that academic departments should get a greater share of the tuition and fee waivers, which now mostly go to athletes.

Overall, the committee was very supportive of college athletics.

The committee presented its recommendations with a cover letter on stationery that features a picture of the college mascot, a Cardinal, and the slogan, “Go Cardinals!!!”
