Huskies Throttle Cougars

Washington handed Washington State its second straight volleyball loss Friday night, a 15-10, 15-6, 10-15, 16-14 setback in Seattle.

“Another rotten passing night for the Cougars,” WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. “Lack of assignments, lack of responsibility on the team’s part, people just not playing aggressively.

“That is a problem right now. Everybody is playing tentative volleyball right now and no one is getting after the ball.”

The Huskies, 5-7 in the Pac-10 and 9-10 overall, had five players in double-figure kills, led by junior Angela Bransom with 21.

For sixth-ranked WSU (9-3, 17-3), Sarah Silvernail led the Cougars with 22 kills, 15 digs and five blocks, while Shannon Wyckoff had 15 kills and 15 digs.

Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 19 kills and Lynne Hyland added 40 assists as Idaho defeated Eastern Washington 15-3, 15-10, 15-2 in a Big Sky Conference match in Cheney.

The Vandals (9-1, 21-4) took commanding leads in each of the three games and trailed only twice in the match.

Hyland’s 40 assists put her past the 3,000 mark for her career. At 3,038, the junior setter became just the second Vandal to reach the mark. Kelley Neely amassed 4,744 assists from 1982-85.

Kellie Glaus, a senior, led EWU (1-9, 6-17) with nine kills. She broke Eastern’s all-time kills record of 1,148 set by Andrea Pochman from 1990-93. Glaus has 1,151 kills.

Loyola Marymount defeated Gonzaga 15-10, 15-4, 15-10. GU is 1-7 in the West Coast Conference, 3-22 overall. LMU (8-0, 16-3) finished with 50 kills to Gonzaga’s 29.

Whitworth fell to 1-10 NCIC, 4-21 overall after the visiting Pirates were beaten by Linfield, 15-2, 15-4, 15-2. Mandy Decious finished with 11 kills for Whitworth.

Spokane defeated Skagit 15-8, 15-6 in the Mount Hood Classic at Gresham, Ore. CCS’s Sheryl Hovde had 23 assists and Josie Hopkins had nine digs in the win. Earlier in the day, CCS beat Umpqua 15-7, 15-8.

Women’s soccer

Jody Payne, Kimberly Schelpf and Tari Beck all scored in the second half to lead Washington State to a 3-0 win over Hawaii in a non-conference match in Pullman.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Glazer posted her second straight shutout for the Cougars (4-10-1). The Rainbows are 3-12-2.

Loyola Marymount’s Heather Farr scored two goals, leading her team to a 5-0 win over Gonzaga in Los Angeles.

The Lions (2-4 WCC, 6-11-1), dominated from the start, limiting GU (0-4, 2-15) to four shots on goal, while getting 25 of their own.

Men’s soccer
