Ferris Tops Lc, Wins Top Seed
Ferris proved its mettle Saturday, beating three top teams to win the Cavanaugh’s Inns/GSL District volleyball tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.
Second-seeded Ferris capped its impressive day by outlasting No. 3 Lewis and Clark 18-16, 15-13, 8-15, 15-8 on the strength of Missy Blackshire’s 15 kills and eight blocks. Sarah Hiss had 14 kills and 15 digs for LC.
Friday’s first round at the Region IV-AAA Tournament in Wenatchee is: GSL No. 1 Ferris vs. Big Nine No. 4 Wenatchee; GSL No. 2 LC vs. Big Nine No. 3 Davis; GSL No. 3 Gonzaga Prep vs. Big Nine No. 2 Pasco; and GSL No. 4 North Central vs. Big Nine No. 1 Walla Walla.
Ferris opened with a 15-6, 15-13, 15-8 win over North Central. Four Saxons had eight kills, including K.C. Richards, who added 17 digs and four aces. Tamara Van Engelen had 12 kills and three aces for the Indians.
LC, behind Ingrid Lindeblad’s 38 assists and five aces, followed with an 8-15, 15-9, 17-15, 15-12 decision over state top-ranked G-Prep - the Bullpups’ first loss to a GSL school.
The second loss came 2 hours later, 15-6, 15-10, 15-4 at the hands of Ferris. Molly Jones had 17 assists for Ferris; Brandy Barratt led the Bullpups with 13 kills and four blocks.
Molly Fisher’s 13 kills and 11 blocks helped Pullman beat host West Valley 15-10, 5-15, 15-12, 15-8 and tie the Eagles for third place in the Frontier League. Chantelle Frost of WV had 14 kills and 11 blocks.
WV and Pullman (7-5), which split this year, may need a Tuesday playoff to determine the third and fourth seeds to Saturday’s District 7-AA Tournament at Clarkston.
At Odessa, Jessica Martin had 11 kills as Wilbur-Creston (26-0) beat Reardan 15-3, 15-4 in the Bi-County League tournament title match.
Earlier, Odessa eliminated Almira/ Coulee-Hartline 11-15, 15-3, 15-1.
The District 7-B Tournament begins Thursday at Springdale. Opening matches are: Bi-County No. 1 W-C vs. Panorama No. 4; Bi-Co No. 2 Reardan vs. Panorama No. 3; Bi-Co No. 3 Davenport vs. Panorama No. 2; and Bi-Co No. 4 Odessa vs. Panorama No. 1.
Northwest Christian and Inchelium won twice to advance to Monday’s title match at the Panorama League tournament in Springdale.
Monday’s loser-out matches are Columbia vs. Republic and Springdale vs. Selkirk. Winners play for third and fourth district seeds.
St. John-Endicott and DeSales won their pools at Walla Walla and advanced with Tekoa-Oakesdale and Waitsburg to the second round of the District 9-B Tournament, Saturday at Pullman.
Colfax (14-0) wrapped up its perfect Northeast A League season by beating Newport. The Bulldogs and No. 2 Deer Park have opening-round byes at district.
Medical Lake (3-11) beat Kettle Falls to tie Chewelah for the NEA’s sixth and final spot to district. The teams will need a tiebreaker before Saturday’s district at Mead High.
Football
George Petticrew threw four touchdown passes, including three to Adam Cummings, as Lakeside (5-1, 5-3) beat visiting Medical Lake 42-20 at Nine Mile to clinch the NEA’s second and final state playoff spot.
Tai Saito rushed for 145 yards and Jason Downie added 123 for the Eagles. Aaron Carr had 12 carries for 149 yards for the Cardinals (1-5, 1-7).
Girls soccer
Katie Bowers scored twice in top-seeded Deer Park/Riverside’s 5-1 District 7-AA playoff win over No. 4 Cheney at DP.
DP/R plays for the district title and a berth to the state tournament at 2 p.m. Tuesday against visiting EV, which beat WV on Saturday.
