Honorable Moon Wire-To-Wire Victor In Juvenile Hers Stakes

Older Spokane horse racing fans remember when Dick Wright was a champion jockey, but his accomplishments as a trainer at Playfair Race Course are beginning to overtake his feats as a rider.

Wright, who won back-to-back riding titles in 1967 and 1968, saddled another stakes-winner Saturday when Honorable Moon, a surprise pacesetter, went wire-to-wire to win the $19,150 Juvenile Hers Stakes on Breeders’ Cup Day.

Ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, a former Playfair champion himself, Honorable Moon nursed a short lead for the first half-mile then pulled away from Order Up Molly for a 3-1/2-length triumph. Multiple stakes-winner Tough Tara, the favorite, finished third in the field of nine 2-year-old fillies.

Honorable Moon ran the Playfair Course of about 6-1/2 furlongs in 1:19-1/15 and paid $9 to win.

Honorable Moon, third or better in all five career starts, gave Wright his second stakes victory this season. The 13-race program, including the seven Breeders’ Cup races, attracted 5,407 fans statewide. They wagered $1,141,820, the fifth-largest total in track history.

Toughy’s Gold, winner of the colts and geldings division of the All West Futurity, will be tested by Chirrup, another Dick Wright trainee, and four others in today’s Juvenile His Stakes.

Post time will be at 1:30 p.m.
