Things To Do Winter Activity Guide Available Now

Graham Vink Travel Editor

A winter guide to activities and facilities around Washington state is now available - free - from Washington State Tourism.

Sample topics include wildlife watching in the Skagit Valley, snowmobile excursions, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and antique tours. For a copy, call (800) 890-5493.

Places to stay: Interesting lodgings in the region:

The Inn at Priest Lake, near Coolin, Idaho, is a new establishment offering rooms, spa suites, kitchenettes and a full-hookup RV park. It also offers winter snowmobiling packages that include snowmobile rentals; for information, call (800) 443-6240 or (208) 443-2121.

Book report: Books of interest to Northwest travelers:

“Oregon on my Mind,” a new coffee-table book from Falcon Press, isn’t really about travel. But the photos of mountains, rivers, lakes, streams, forests, farms, beaches, vineyards and cities are so lovely that they make you want to visit our neighboring state - immediately.

The 150 color photos on the book’s oversize 120 pages are accompanied by excerpts from different writers, from John Muir to Ken Kesey to William O. Douglas. At $30, the price is not unreasonable, and it would make a nice gift for anyone who appreciates the Northwest.

Change of season:

The Yakima Valley’s “Thanksgiving in Wine Country” celebration will be Nov. 24-26. Each winery is featuring a different treat that uses wine as either an ingredient or a complimentary food and wine combination.

Participating wineries will be open from 10-5 daily during this event. For information, call (800) 221-0751.

Yellowstone National Park, a popular destination during summer months, also attracts attention during winter. People wanting to learn more about Yellowstone in the snow can take courses offered by the non-profit Yellowstone Institute.

For more information, call (307) 344-2294.
