Suspect’s Extradition Expected Funeral Services Today For Pair Killed Last Week

Associated Press

Funeral services were scheduled here today for Rita Wyman and her son, Paul, as the man accused of a gun and fire attack on the Wyman family home faces a federal magistrate in Texas.

Carl Sidney Race was captured on a beach at Corpus Christi, Texas, Saturday, one week after he allegedly shot four members of the Wyman family and set fire to their farm home outside Miles City.

His initial appearance before a magistrate was to include notice that he is subject to extradition to Montana.

Investigators say Race, 49, from Woodland, Wash., apparently blamed the Wymans for the breakup of his marriage. His wife, Nancy, is Rita Wyman’s sister.

Rita, 55, and Paul, 28, died in the attack. Rita’s husband, Claude, and another son, Jeff, 32, were critically injured by shotgun wounds and burns.

Custer County Sheriff Tony Harbaugh said Claude Wyman’s condition has improved somewhat and he is no longer listed as critical. Jeff Wyman, however, remained in very critical condition in a Salt Lake City burn center.

The FBI in Houston said Race did not resist when he was arrested at daybreak Saturday and no weapons were found in his car.

He is charged in Montana with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of arson.

Race faces other charges in Washington and Michigan, but Harbaugh said Montana will retain primary jurisdiction over him. Harbaugh was elated that Race had been captured.

“I think it’s going to be at least some relief for the family and friends of the victims to know that he’s no longer a threat to anyone,” the sheriff said.

In Michigan, Race is charged with attempted murder and firearms violations for a drive-by shooting at a neighbor’s house on Oct. 14.

An arrest warrant was issued for Race in Washington before the Montana murders for failing to appear in court on drunken-driving and hit-and-run charges.
