Georgia Lawmakers Ok Election Laws
Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze was one step closer Friday to his long-held dream of a strong, executive presidency after parliament overwhelmingly approved an election law.
Lawmakers voted 158-2 in favor of elections for the newly created post of president. The elections are slated for Nov. 5.
Shevardnadze, now the chairman of parliament, had announced Wednesday that he would run for president. His declaration came a day after he narrowly survived a car bombing.
