Local Ewu Students Receive Leadership Awards

Laurie Putnam Henry and R. Joshua Collins, Eastern Washington University students, have received the 1995 Student Leadership Awards from EWU’s Alumni Association and Associated Students.

Henry, a 1984 graduate of Central Valley High School, is head volleyball and assistant for girls basketball coach at Medical Lake High School, and assistant coach and head freshman softball coach at Ferris.

Married and the mother of a 4-year-old son, she volunteers with Bloomsday and Hoopfest and as a behavior intervention assistant for Spokane School District 81 and plays softball with the Spokane co-ed recreational league.

Henry is a senior majoring in physical education with a minor in health education.

Collins, a 1992 graduate of Mead High School, is treasurer of the EWU Black Student Union and is active in ASEWU governance. He is a third-year mathematics/ elementary education major and editor of Omega Psi Phi’s fraternal magazine.

Collins is the first recipient of the Black Student Education Award from the Washington Water Power Company. He is the son of Kathy Wind, Grandview, Wash.

The following Inland Northwest Whitworth College students have qualified for the Laureate Society for spring semester.

Gregory Thompson, TNT United Truck Lines, Spokane, was one of seven Washington Truck Driving Champions to compete against 345 professional drivers at the National Truck Driving Championships held in New Orleans, La.

Lara Frizzell, daughter of Bob and Jeanie Cook, Spokane, has been selected as an Andrew Jackson Rider Scholar, based on academic achievement. She was also named to the Dean’s List for spring semester at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Lilac Blind Foundation has received $4,000 from the Smith Barney insurance company as part of its local contributions program being conducted throughout the country.

Berit Thompson, first vice president of the Smith Barney’s Spokane office, made the nomination.
