C.J. Williams, sophomore tailback, ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns in Georgia Tech’s 51-7 win over Division 1-AA Furman.
Florida State coach Bobby Bowden got his 250th career victory in a 70-26 win over Duke. Bowden joins Bear Bryant, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner and Joe Paterno as the only coaches to reach that plateau in Division I-A.
Auburn QB Patrick Nix threw for a school-record 382 yards, completing 28 of 39 passes. He threw for one TD and ran for two.
Mercury Hayes, Michigan’s hero in last Saturday’s comefrom-behind win over Virgina, had 56 yards on three receptions.
Youngstown State, the defending I-AA national champion, had its unbeaten streak ended at 20 games with a 20-17 loss to Kent… . FSU won its 25th consecutive ACC game with a 70-26 victory over Duke.
Randy Huntley ran for 125 yards to become black college football’s all-time leading rusher in Winston-Salem State’s 33-6 victory over Fort Valley State. Huntley broke the career rushing record held by Leo Lewis of Lincoln (Mo.) with 4,458 yards.
Minoso Rodgers ran for 193 yards and three touchdowns to lead Richmond to a 51-28 win over VMI.
Robert Morris’ Jake Newman threw five touchdown passes in a 41-6 victory over Waynesburg.
Maryland quarterback Brian Cummings, making his debut against Tulane, injured his left ankle with 15 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
Cummings was taken from the field on a cart before halftime. He was transported to a hospital for X-rays.
Southern Methodist, meanwhile, also suffered a critical injury and this one came 15 seconds into the game when QB Ramon Flanigan dislocated his hip. The junior was the total offensive leader in the Southwest Conference last year and ranked 13th in the nation with 237.1 yards per game.
Heisman watch
Tommie Frazier, QB, Nebraska: Was 6 of 10 for 120 yards, and had two TD passes in the Huskers’ win over Oklahoma State on Thursday. The senior also rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 1-yard run.
Lawrence Phillips, RB, Nebraska: The junior rushed for 153 yards on 12 carries and scored from 3, 80 and 27 yards against Oklahoma State.
Leeland McElroy, RB, Texas A&M: The junior rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns and gained 359 all-purpose yards as the Aggies defeated LSU.
Robert Edwards, RB, Georgia: Had four rushing TDs and had one TD catch of 45 yards. He had 169 yards on 30 carries and had two catches of 42 yards in the Bulldogs’ win over South Carolina.
Warrick Dunn, RB, Florida St.: Rushed for 124 yards on nine carries, caught two passes for 13 yards and also threw one pass for 55 yards.
