Wampus Cats Break Through
Angie Ponak recorded eight kills Wednesday as Clark Fork outlasted visiting Mullan 15-13, 4-15, 15-7 in a North Star League volleyball match.
The Wampus Cats improved to 1-1, 1-2. Mullan is 0-1, 1-3.
Girls soccer
Kim Rehwer and Megan Cummings scored second-half goals to rally host Ferris to a 2-1 Greater Spokane League season-opening win over University.
U-Hi dominated the first half, with nine of its 14 shots on goal coming before intermission. All of the shots missed the mark.
The Titans finally connected 15 minutes into the second half, as Sara Streufert dribbled down the right side and crossed a pass to Casey Lektorlich.
In other GSL openers, Jessica Fransen took part in four goals during the first 48 minutes at host Lewis and Clark toppled North Central 5-0 at Hart Field.
At Central Valley, Katie Carpenter scored twice and Gina Polignoni set up Holly Hyatt for two goals in a 7-0 win overs Rogers. Rogers’ Angie Vulcano had 19 saves.
At Mead Junior High, the nine-time defending league champion Mead Panthers shared the wealth in a 6-0 win over Shadle Park.
Katrina Morton, Allison Beatty, Stacy Clinesmith, Jen Dunford, Kellie Leaf and Kari Andrakin all scored for Mead. Leaf had three assists.
Men’s soccer
Clay Harty scored three goals to lead visiting Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo to a 4-2 non-conference win, spoiling the Gonzaga University debut of coach Einar Thorarinsson.
After Harty’s first score, midway through the first half, the Bulldogs took the lead on goals by Jeff McAllister and Joshua Kaiel. McAllister’s goal came off a pass from Scott Davis; Kaiel’s goal was a header off a pass from Rusty Arlig.
Women’s volleyball
Washington State and Idaho shifted their non-league match to Sept. 30 in Pullman.
The teams had intended to compete Wednesday at Pullman.
